Heterosexual women use highly effective methods to prevent pregnancy and decrease the risk of conception, but they may not be using methods that are nearly as effective for men, according to a recent study by researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. The researchers, who are affiliated with UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, looked at a national sample of pregnant women between ages 18 and 43 to determine their methods of contraceptive use, how effective they were and the relationship between sexual partners and pregnancy outcomes. The study, published online April 25 in the journal Human Reproduction, found that condom use was very effective at preventing pregnancy for both men and women. However, only about 30 percent of women used the most effective method of contraceptive use. "More than half of women who had unprotected intercourse were able to conceive," said Lauren Stiles, PhD, the study's lead author and a research fellow in the Division of Reproductive and Developmental Epidemiology at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center. "There are lots of reasons for these findings, but condom use alone is not enough. In this study, condom use was not particularly effective at decreasing risk." As the researchers expected, women who used highly effective methods to prevent pregnancy, such as implants, IUDs or hormonal injections, were about eight times less likely to conceive than women who did not use highly effective methods.
